Get a journal!

The key to becoming a good writer is to take the time to practice the art of writing!  Today so few students take the time necessary to actually improve as writers.  We want a "quick fix" to everything whether it's our electronics, the work we produce, or even sometimes our relationships.  Attention to detail, craftsmanship, has been, largely, lost in our civilization.  Food is fast, microwavable, and clothes are thrown out at the sign of a loose thread.  And between our computers, iPhones, iPods, radios, television and video and computer games, who has time to reflect, re-write, and redo anything.

I am always astounded when I hear a student say that he or she spent fifteen minutes writing a paragraph only to find out that it is "D" or "F" work.  They seem shocked.  Writing, to many, has been reduced to fragments, quick broken sentences via text messages.   "I <3 u" replaces the romantic love notes so treasured by couples in love in previous centuries who wrote each other five page long letters detailing their thoughts to one another.

Recently I gave students an assignment to write themselves a letter and then enclose it in a self-addressed, stamped envelope.  One student said he had never written a letter before, or at least not a real one--only ones for school that were never actually sent.  Over half the class did not know how to address their envelopes!  And still a third student did not realize that you had to lick the envelope to seal it!  Writing, pen to paper, is almost completely a lost art as everything has become digitalized.  But with digitalization often comes that lack of reflection.  Spell check quickly fixes errors, and when students can type 50 words per minute, it is no wonder that they hardly take the time to consider their choice of words or whether or not the way they are phrasing something actually makes sense.

And that is why I am asking you to get a journal--with paper!  I want you to be able to feel the page and see your handwriting.  I want you to personalize your journal.  It can be big or small, fat or skinny.  You can illustrate the cover or purchase one with a cover you like.  You can cover it in quotes that you like or images that strike you.  Make it yours because for the next few months it will become your friend.  I hope the experience will make you life long keepers of a journal and through that, reflective people who realize that rushing is not always what leads to a joyful experience of life.

Have you ever kept a journal before?  Why or why not?  Do you look forward to keeping one?  Explain.

  3. Make sure that all your comments are thoughtful and appropriate. I removed the last comment for two reasons:

    1. It was inappropriate and rude. It wasn't thoughtful and the writers did not write using the rules of standard English.

    2. It was anonymous. All posts must include your name.

  4. I have never kept a journal before. I haven't because I never wanted to and I didn't think that I would enjoy keeping one. I am looking forward to keeping the journal because I want to see if I would actually like it.

  5. I have never kept a journal before. I have not kept a journal before because the only real time I would have to be writing would be in the summer. Most likely during the summer, writing would not be the first thing on my mind. Therefore, it never really comprehended with my schedule.I guess I am excited to do this and keep a journal because I have never had a journal before, so it is something new to look forward to.

  6. I thought that what you said was very true. Though all emails and writing on the internet can never be lost, it doesn't carry the same significance as older forms of writing did. Our generation looks at previous generations and we are constantly finding out something new because more information is being gradually uncovered, but with our generation it is all right there for us to see. Our society is at an information overload.I think it is important that we try to reclaim this lost art of writing before it slips into complete obscurity.

  8. I do look forward to keeping a journal. I have never kept one before because I just have never had reason to and felt that I didn't need to keep one. I look forward to keeping one because I think that it may help me improve my skills as a writer, but also offer me the opportunity to reflect on my life and see what i can improve in myself.

  9. I have never kept a journal before. I usually do not express my feelings in writing and If I ever did, I would always do it in person. I never thought I would write a journal because since I do not express my feelings in writing, it would be hard. Also, most of the guys in my grade, do not keep journals and are not good at expressing their feelings like me. But, after all this is a creative writing class, which I took to help improve my writing. Because I have never kept a journal before, I look forward into keeping one, but on the other hand I would rather stick to saying things in person.

  10. I have never kept a journal before. I never kept one before because i never felt the need to write it out because, i usually just turn to my friends to tell them about my problems. I do look forward to having a journal because this way i could learn more about myself by writing in it. Also, by keeping this journal i could always look back at what I said before so i can see how I changed my perspective on things.

  11. I have never actually kept a journal before, but I think this will be a fun experiment for me and for others to try. I do look forward to using a journal so that I can express myself in different ways. Keeping this journal will teach me more about myself everyday through my writing and through what words I will put on the paper. I also look forward to see how much paper I will use up in it.

  12. I currently keep a journal so I can remember my thoughts and actions of the present in the future. In the past, I have tried to keep journals but never seemed to be consistent when writing in it. I most definitely agree with your opinion that keeping a journal is helpful, and feel that with electronic communication, conversations and ideas are often lost and deleted. So I very much look forward to continuing to keep my journal and looking back through it when I'm older.

  13. Last year in X block Ms.Mc Caskill gave each student a journal, whether people called it a man book it is all the same. Most people did not actually use them as much as they colored and similar things, as for me I just filled it with jokes I thought were funny. So I guess I technically have not "used" a journal before. I personally do not think that keeping journals with personal information in it are good because my mom has friends randomly told me that she had one and wrote that she did not want to live with her step dad, but with her real dad. This only further crushed her step dad's heart because she never knew her father or knew his where abouts. So I think that maybe practicing your writing by making short Stories is better, but "Different stokes for different folks" is what my grandma would say. I guess it maybe a good idea for some people, but for me in my house I do not believe in absolute privacy and even if there was I do not know how to put my feelings or thoughts down on paper because they are a jumble.

I do not mean this to be hurtful to anyone that may have different thoughts or beliefs, but I was honest and serious about my answer.

  14. Dylan--that wasn't rude. It was honest and you gave reasons why keeping a journal might be harmful if someone else were to read it which is a legitimate concern.

I think our definition of a journal needs to be broadened. A place to write jokes, draw, and tell funny stories can still be a journal! A journal can be anything you want it to be. It doesn't have to be filled with problems. The reason why some people decide to write about their problems in a journal is because they don't feel comfortable doing this with others. I, however, write about anything that comes to my mind. For example:

    -what I did that day
    -goals that I have
    -hopes and dreams
    -stories
    -poems
    -drawings
    -prayers
-reflections about who I am and who I want to be

I think sometimes we have to narrow a view of what a journal is or what it should be. YOU determine what your journal is because it's a reflection of you.

    What do you guys think?

  16. To be honest, I have never ever kept a journal in my possesseion containing the thought and feeling of myself. In the future I still will not be keeping a journal anytime soon. (Unless instructed by a teacher) P.S. this comment was not meant to be rude to anyone who might take it the wrong way.

  17. I have never kept a journal before. I have never kept a journal before because I have never thought that you can just put your thoughts on a piece of paper. I look forward to keeping one because people who have kept one have told me how cool it is and that whatever you are thinking about u just can write it down on a piece of paper. Ms. Medley your journal was very nice and it was true.

  18. No, I have never kept a personal journal before, but I have had journals for other classes such as religion. I just don't have time to write down what happened today, because of all the homework, sports, or other things that keep me busy such as chores and other daily tasks. If I did have time I would keep a journal and even if I did keep a journal it would have every single day written into it. I do enjoy writing but I cannot do it every day for fun, but if I had the time would. I do look forward to keeping one this class. I have had some experience with journals in other classes, but, I know every class is different.

  19. I have never kept a journal before, and I'm not sure, to be quite honest, If I should be excited or not. I do think though I am leaning toward the more excited side. It will be a new experience for me, and I'm all about new things! But I have not known any boys who have kept one. Maybe because boys are always occupied with sports and school, or maybe they thought it was girly because they did not know any guys who wrote a journal either. But I disagree. I think it will be a great experiment to see whether people will enjoy it or not.

  20. I have never kept a journal before. That is because i don't really like to just write my feelings down on paper at the end of each day. If even i had to keep a journal i probably wouldn't be able to write my feelings down daily because of my extra curricular activities. I strongly agree with Dylan Saltman because if i had a journal i would use it to put very funny jokes in it and funny pictures. Also i mainly feel that most girls usually have journals and most boys don't.
This comment is not to be taken offensively.

  21. I have tryed keeping a journal before but that had only lasted three days. I usually don't find time to wite in a journal. If i want to express my feelings about something then i tell my friends or my older sister. I cant just write things down and leave them in my room because i have a an annoying little brother. If i did keep a journal it would probably only contain fun memories that i wouldn't want to forget, nothing personal like my love life or anything. I am definetly excited about keeping a journal but at the same time i know it will be a challenge for me because i have homework on top of club volleyball. I hope this did not come off ofensivly to anyone.

  22. You guys...you are only offensive if you use words or phrases that are rude to others. No one is being offensive except the person who wrote that people who keep journals are "drama queens." Just be honest and thoughtful but please don't end every post with "I hope I am not being offensive."

  23. Yes, I have kept a journal before. It helps me reflect my emotions. After I write in it, I have a feeling of relief and completion. Plus, it's fun to be able to look back on memories that were in your journal many years ago. Your outlook on life changes over time, so it's interesting to see what it was when you were younger. I can see myself in 20 years looking back at what i wrote in my journal and being able to picture myself as a teenager. I really look forward to keeping one because every journal is unique and important in its own way. Plus, writing is fun and creative. The more, the better.
